Boston DTV Antenna Reception Crosses The Border

The Boston television market is the seventh largest in the US: it covers roughly 25,000 square miles of territory in eastern and central Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, northern Rhode Island and northeastern Connecticut.  Boston TV can also be seen in southernmost Maine. The Boston area transmitters are located primarily in the Needham antenna farm along Route I-95/128 about 7 miles west of downtown Boston. The Boston TV area also includes the city of Manchester, NH and Worcester, MA.  

Boston HDTV Antenna Reception Can Be Tricky

Geographically, the city of Boston is quite small and very densely populated. Many areas of the city of Boston have their TV reception impaired by skyscrapers, and Boston's suburbs are spread out over more than 135 cities and towns in 3 states. Boston HDTV antenna reception can vary widely by area, especially in the congested downtown areas of Boston and Cambridge, and Boston suburbs extend 50 miles or more from the transmitters. The June 12, 2009 conversion to digital broadcasting has yielded a mixture of VHF and UHF stations: WHDH remains on channel 7: the other digital stations are now on UHF. 

With Right Boston Antenna, HDTV Reception Can Be Had

The various Spanish stations have traditionally been on UHF channels, and most have changed channels. A few Boston and Cambridge residents have complained of reception issues with WHDH since the transition to digital, but a properly designed VHF high-band antenna will easily solve that problem. Most viewers who live in MetroWest and south of the city of Boston can also see the Providence, Rhode Island TV stations with the proper antenna and rotator system. 

Previously, the Boston area was mix of  VHF and UHF analog stations, so many viewers have already installed antennas capable of receiving both TV bands, but many people have found that the changes in channels among the local TV stations have confused them. Everyone who is having problems with the new digital channels is suggested to rescan their digital tuners and converter boxes to find the new channels. 

So What Boston HDTV Antenna Is Right For it's Residents

Those viewers who live within 35 miles of Needham antenna farm, and have no major obstructions between their location and the transmitters, should consider a high quality all channel antenna like a Winegard HD-7694P or a 7696P.  If you have an existing VHF antenna and need to add UHF capability to it, consider a Channel Master 4221HD or a Winegard HD-9032 plus an antenna coupler. Viewers who have current UHF antennas but lack VHF reception should consider an AntennaCraft Y-2-7-13 or a Winegard YA-1713 VHF high-band antenna plus a coupler.
