The New York city TV market is the largest in the US: it covers portions of 3 states, Lower New York and Long Island, NY0, Northern New Jersey and Fairfield County, Connecticut. Reception in the Five Boroughs of New York ranges from easy to impossible due to the heavy concentration of skyscrapers in Manhattan. So in some instances finding the best New York HDTV antenna can be tricky. The NYC transmitters are located primarily on the Empire State Building, currently the tallest building in NYC. The June 12, 2009 conversion to digital broadcasting has yielded a mixture of VHF and UHF stations: WABC, WPIX and WNET have returned to their original analog channels, while WCBS, WNBC, WNYW and WWOR have moved their signals to UHF.
Previously, the New York area was primarily a VHF market, and many people have found that some or all of their usual stations had relocated or disappeared.
Prior to June, 12, all of the NYC digital stations were broadcasting on UHF, and many people bought UHF antennas, thinking that their reception problems had been solved. After June 12, those people found that they lost ABC, CW and PBS. The installation of a simple VHF high-band antenna and coupler will usually solve that problem. Our customers are delighted to learn that this New York City HDTV antenna upgrade was all that was needed!
For those folks that waited until analog broadcasting ceased, and found that all that they could get on their digital converters was ABC, CW and PBS, the installation of a UHF antenna and coupler is called for.
Those viewers who live within 30 miles of the Empire State Building, and have no major obstructions between their location and the transmitters, should consider a high quality VHF-high-band plus UHF antenna like a Winegard HD-7694P or an AntennaCraft HBU-33. If you have an existing VHF antenna and need to add UHF capability to it, consider a Channel Master 4221HD or a Winegard HD-9032 plus an antenna coupler. For those who need to add VHF capability to their UHF antenna, consider a Winegard YA-1713 VHF high—band yagi, or the smaller AntennaCraft Y-5-7-13 and an antenna coupler.
Our customers get it right the first time!
